*KIELY’S HERO’S WIN 7-6 ON PENALTIES

BY ADRIAN FLANAGAN AT WATERPARK
A sudden death penalty shootout decided the destination of the FSL Summer tournament trophy after Columbus Crew and Kiely’s Hero’s played out a thrilling decider at Waterpark on Friday evening last and it was the latter that were crowned the champions. It was an end to end encounter over the hour that was superbly refereed by the vastly experienced Paul Mooney, who allowed play to flow, which added to the occasion and when Columbus Crew defender David Hutchinson had the misfortunate of missing in the shootout, it was good enough for Kiely’s to triumph. There were chances galore during normal time and on reflection, Columbus Crew will be a tad disappointed that they failed to score a second goal when they seemed in control of the tie but one has to credit Kiely’s Hero’s as they kept on fighting to force the dreaded penalties.
It took a superb save from Kiely’s goalkeeper Andrew Halligan to deny Columbus Crew the breakthrough on two minutes when Ian Crowley whipped in a right-wing free kick that was cleared to Ian Cantwell on the edge of the penalty area but somehow Halligan managed to tip a cracking shot over the bar. Kiely’s created a number of chances of their own in a three-minute spell that saw Ian Walsh and Stephen Dalton twice go close but they couldn’t find a way past keeper David Dennison, who did well to keep out the effort from Walsh. Barry Crossan had an attack for Columbus on 11 minutes when he latched onto a pass from Kevin Jordan but he shot straight at keeper Andrew Halligan before David Greene flashed a header following an Ian Cantwell left-wing free kick over the crossbar. But Kiely’s should have opened the scoring on 13 minutes when Andy Reid raced clear on goal after a Wayne Dunne through ball, however keeper David Dennison produced a magnificent save and from the rebound, Ian Walsh blazed inches over the crossbar when he should have hit the target.
Columbus Crew did find the lead goal on 20 minutes when Ian Crowley skipped past the challenge of Stephen O’Donoghue down the left-wing and when his cross fell at the feet of Darragh Cullen, he steered a left-footed shot to the corner of the net from ten yards. The same player had a real opportunity to double his sides advantage on 26 minutes when he latched onto a long ball over the top but after keeper Halligan failed to hold the first effort from the attacker, Cullen couldn’t find the target with the rebound. The second half saw Kiely’s go for an equalising goal and on 36 minutes, Ian Walsh slipped the ball in for Stephen Dalton but the centre forward dragged a left-footed shot inches wide of the far post before substitute Brian O’Donoghue did level the tie sixty seconds later when he finished in a crowded penalty area. Cullen had a chance to win the game for Columbus Crew late on but despite getting on the end of a Kevin Jordan pass, the centre forward dragged a shot inches wide and while Kiely’s Hero’s did have a late penalty appeal rightly turned down by referee Mooney, both teams had to be happy to decide the game on penalties.
Stephen Dalton, Pat Kiely, Seamus Byrnes, Gary Reid, Andy Reid, Andrew Halligan and Tom Wilshere were all successful from the spot for the victors and despite Ian Crowley, Barry Crossan, Ian Cantwell, Kevin Jordan, David Dennison and Vinny Keane all scoring, it was heartbreak for David Hutchinson when he fired wide.
After the game, Jim Flanagan presented the trophy to Kiely’s Hero’s captain Tony Kiely. Ian Crowley of Columbus Crew was named as the man of the match, while two charities Waterford Hospice and Autism Waterford benefited financially from the tournament.
