ABOUT FLOODLIT SOCCER

The League has recently seen a big drop off in the number of teams participating due to several factors: the financial downturn, deterioration of the Waterpark playing surface and a rival league starting up in the city. This rival league has the backing of the WIT and all its state funded capital and facilities with which the FSL simply cannot compete. Likewise its operating from a far stronger financial background and can price accordingly. Months before the new league started Floodlit Soccer held talks the WIT about moving to Carriganore. A formal written proposal was requested by the WIT and the FSL duly obliged. However a few weeks later this was turned down on the grounds that they were setting up their own Omnisport leagues. Apart from the obvious shock, Floodlit Soccer was also very surprised at the shabby way the WIT conducted their business. Even worse was the fact that the new league simply copied nearly all of our rules and formats and are now trying to pass them off as their own. Shameful !!!!

Another less obvious factor was the gap in strength that developed between the teams which resulted in many players drifting away and teams no longer able to take part due to a lack of numbers. However this in turn has now seen the FSL reverting back to its roots with games becoming less frantic, no more "packed" teams and the "win at all costs" mentality being abandoned. In other words teams can once again enjoy a competitive yet social game of weekly eleven a side soccer !!!

The 2011/12 season sees 9 teams competing in one Division for trophies, medals and a full set of gear comprising jerseys, shorts, socks and kit bag. A Cup & Shield will also be held near the end of the season. The Summer Tournament will again take place through June, July & August.

The Waterford Floodlit Soccer League was formed in August 2002 following the collapse of Nightowls International Leagues PLC and after quickly filling the void it steadily grew in size and popularity. Nightowls was originally set up for retired and older players but in its new format it developed to cater for all ages, grades and abilities by providing a competitive game of eleven a side football, Monday to Friday, all year round on astro turf pitches. Players therefore have every weekend free with a full fixture list issued before the season begins to allow forward planning.

The website is an integral part of the continued success of Floodlit Soccer by offering its members something that other leagues can only dream about. The site is updated every night and teams can log on to view league tables, fixtures, results, goalscorers, plus many other features including competitions and an extensive archive section.

The success of Floodlit Soccer can be attributed to many factors but its simplicity is at the heart of it. Anyone can join or enter a team with no need for committees, grounds or other complications. Floodlit Soccer is unique in the fact that it is self regulated and doesnt have an affiliation to FIFA or any other governing body. This means FSL is free to adjust rules and regulations to suit its needs.
